I felt that the subtlety and delicacy of watercolour was the best medium to portray the freshness and vitality of primroses in spring. As a kid I used to go out with my family and friends picking them in the hills at East Dean near Chichester.

'On a winter's day, in the lane just outside my studio, the frost looked like a lattice of lace in the diffused early morning light. Cold versus hot and thin spidery strands versus a textured mass attracted my attention.'
